4hours skiing on Ben Lawers

Lunedì 29 Aprile 2013Durata: 2 min 27 sec

I've never had the pleasure so I thought I'd check out Ben Lawers this morning. I'm also interested in finding something closer to home so I can head out just for the morning. I slept through my alarm so only had four hours but it was enough for some fun. I started walking at 5:45am and was just below the summit at 7:30am. I was on the road heading home at 10am. My route started at the car park on the way to the dam, up Coire Odhar and round the back of Beinn Ghlas. I would have made the summit in about 1h45-2hours but I got blown over on the col between the two peaks. I decided a safer route would be to keep out of the wind and scramble up the little gully instead of walking the ridge. It turned out to be a decent gradient so I skied that instead and then traversed around onto the West face of Ben Lawers and skied until the snow stopped. I then hiked back over into Coire Odhar and skied the burn line to about 700 metres. For sure there is better skiing out there just now but I was keen to explore the area as I've read so much about it and it's history in Scottish ski-mountaineering. It has so much potential with a huge variety of aspects and gradients, I'm looking forward to returning next season. Music is 'Falling' by Julee Cruise from The Orb's 'Back to Mine' compilation.
